LomoTravels: Revival Venice Day 2 / Of Torcello, Burano and St. Mark’s Square

The alarm went off. Eyes opened. First thing out of bed was to ruffle the curtain drapes and peer out the window.

Still raining.

Nevertheless, we decided to push on with our plan to visit the neighboring islands Torcello and Burano. Who knows, maybe by the time we reached, the weather would have improved.

After an hour of traveling which involved transferring from one vaporetta to another, we finally reached the shores of Torcello. At this time, the rain was falling even more heavily. And the winds. The piercing winds!!

Compounding the depressing weather was the virtually empty streets as local vendors were all holed up at home while tourists that were as hardcore/foolish as us were far and few.

Nearing the center of the island with the Church of Santa Fosca in sight.

A group of tourists (who arrived on a private yacht, so they ain’t hardcore like us) crowding near the stone chair known as Attila’s Throne. Which apparently has no link whatsoever to Attila the Hun.

Lingered around for awhile before heading back to the vaporetta stop for our boat ride to Burano. Although the main draw of Burano was its collection of brightly colored houses, we ended up crossing a bridge to explore the areas beyond it. I’ve only realised now that area is another island altogether, called Mazzorbo.

By the time we got round to exploring the real Burano, the sun was also about to come out and play.

Happiness is feeling the warmth of the sun slowing but surely thawing your shriveled up bodies. And feasting your eyes on the Burano houses in their full glory.

In my excitement, I went a little bit trigger happy on my fisheye baby. Goggles effect for the win!

Noticed this house with an entrance made up of colorful bricks. Looked kinda important especially when there was a kitty guarding it. Meow!

Thought we were seeing things but we were certain the bell tower was indeed leaning. Seemed like leaning towers are quite a common theme here. What’s with these Italian architects eh?

Although there weren’t any out of the world monuments to see or fun filled activities to do, I will always remember Burano fondly. Can’t help but feel I’m snuggling up to a quilt of happiness and warmth when I think about Burano.

Got back to Venice in the afternoon and made our way to the famed Rialto Bridge to see the best view of the Grand Canal. With a bit of time to spare we decided to take up the challenge of finding our way on foot.

It gave us the opportunity to get real close to the gondolas without paying a single cent. Cheapskate 101.

It also granted us the experience of squeezing through the tight alleys of Venice. Which afforded me plenty of waiting time to take this shot.

You know you’re nearing the Grand Canal when it is getting harder to move pass the crowds. Finally made it onto the bridge and quickly took up a freshly vacated spot for this snapshot.

Here is what the Rialto looks like with the clouds masterfully painted on. That is if you consider my camera as the paintbrush and the film as the canvas.

Then we’re off to St Mark’s Square to right the wrong of yesterday. And it was absolutely lovely. The sun was blazing, live classical music was emanating from the alfresco cafes. We were just sat there in the middle of the square like everyone else, enjoying life as it is.

When they try to take us down
This is how we’ll sing, oh

We were in no shortage of company as our feathery friends tried scouting for a crumb or two nearby.

Indulging in a spot of pigeon hunting with my camera.

Was in a state of nirvana before being disrupted by a couple of policemen who started asking those sitting in the square to leave. Booooo. Anyhoo being the law abiding Singaporeans that we are, we dusted ourselves off and made our way back to the hotel.

Extremely thankful for the weather today which revived our stay in Venice. Arrivederci Italy! Bonjour Paris!
