LomoTravels: Recounting Paris Day 2 / Of Versailles, Montmartre and Lotsa Lotsa Eiffel

“Shah-Tow Vher-Sigh.”

And that’s the first proper phrase I uttered in French. With surprisingly good results to boot.

The ticketing staff understood perfectly and handed over 2 train tickets to Chateau Versailles better known as the Palace of Versailles (for those who studied history for their O-levels).

Spent our time on the train savoring our takeaway breakfast of French pastries with the occasional background music provided by street musicians. So very different from how we travel back home.

Alighted the train and followed the massive crowd to the palace. Spoiler: more queuing lay in wait.

Being in a mega queue, one tends to be subjected to emotions similar to the five stages of grief:
Denial – “There must be a alternative way to get in.”
Anger – “Can this b*tch stand any nearer?”
Bargaining – “I’ll be willing to pay more to skip this damn queue.”
Depression – “Damn it’s just not moving.”

And finally ‘Acceptance’ in the form of taking pictures of the eye catching palace gates since you’re stuck in the queue anyway.

Once in, we were fed with stories of the Louis-es and their mistresses and how they indulged in an abundance of wealth and decadence, all at the expense of the people.

The Hall of Mirrors. A name that invoked imagery of splendor. A name that is still stuck in my head from late night cramming of history notes years back.

Then it’s the long ride back, more specifically to Montmarte.

Sacre-Coeur#4 Sacred Heart | LC-A+ RL | Lomo Xpro 200
Mainly to see the gorgeous Basilique du Sacre-Coeur.

We mostly hung around the area outside the basilica, sitting along the stairs or benches. Of course not without some snacks and an ice cold beer.

Getting my refreshments and spotted this little cutie all nice and comfy in bed.

Paris street performer#6 Keepy Uppy | LC-A+ RL | Lomo Xpro 200
In Paris, scenes of street performers strutting their stuff are in no short supply. Live music, breakdancing, freestyle rap and guy who juggles a football while perched on a ledge / climbing up a lamppost. Take a bow, son, take a bow.

Waiting for our train to the next destination. My thoughts about the Paris metro stations? Slightly rundown, with a tinge of danger. The train carriages though small, never seemed to be too crowded.

Couldn’t help but break into a totally made up song that went like “Pah-ree, Pah-ree, Pah-ree! (repeat to infinity)” after seeing the tower up close.

It’s iconic. It’s the symbol of Paris. And that’s why I probably got caught up in Eiffel Frenzy and spammed the crap out of my camera. On hindsight, I feel that the Eiffel Tower is slightly overrated (don’t shoot me!). I do appreciate it as an engineering marvel and a spectacular monument but I enjoyed myself better at Montmarte.

That said, you guys still have to bear with my remaining shots of the Eiffel Tower. Or you can just click the x at the top right hand corner.

Imagine staying in one of these apartments and waking up everyday to the gorgeous view of the Eiffel Tower. But then again, one will probably be indifferent to it after a period of time.

Dinner was slightly special tonight. After going without Asian food since arriving in Europe, we finally succumbed. Missed our fix of piping hot food, soup and white rice! Badly.

The meal was terrible though. But it opened the floodgates to more Asian cuisine later on in our trip. Yea I know, that was hella weak.

Returned back to the tower after dinner to catch a glimpse of its view at night. Pretty neat eh.
